Quick facts about the flu:

  • Influenza comes in two varieties. Type A causes moderate to severe illness in all age groups, affecting both humans and animals. Type B causes milder symptoms and affects only humans, primarily children.
  • The flu is not just a strong cold. It is a serious disease that kills an estimate 36,0000 people a year directly or due to influenza related complications.
  • Adults and children with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, weakened immune system, diabetes and others are at higher risk for contracting the flu or being hit harder by it and should strongly consider vaccination.
  • Even if you've had the flu already during the current flu season you can still benefit from vaccination. A variety of flu strains often infect people multiple times in one season.
  • Just because you're pregnant doesn't mean you can't get vaccinated. Rather, it is recommended.

Tips for flu prevention:

  • The best way to prevent flu is to be immunized.
  • Use a tissue when you cough or sneeze - then throw it out. If you don't have a tissue cough into your sleeve.. but please just get a tissue!
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If you are not near water, use an alcohol based cleanser.
  • If you get the flu, stay home, try to maintain minimal contact with healthy individuals.
  • Get plenty of sleep! This is a crucial factor in immune system function.
  • Stay physically active.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Eat nutritious whole foods. Stay away from processed foods, excessive dairy, sugar and alcohol.
